The Oaks Community Church started in the home of Gary and Lori Barber in southwest Bakersfield in 1993. After about a year, seven families committed themselves to launching a new church in Bakersfield in the fall of 1994. The church held it’s first public services at Christa McAuliffe school, in the area called The Oaks – so the group adopted the name The Oaks Community Church. The church slowly grew to about 125 people in 1998 and moved to Stockdale High School. At this time the Lord greatly blessed the church with the gift of 5 1/2 acres less than a mile away on Campus Park Drive. Over the next five years, plans were made, and the Lord enabled many people to give generously so that the church could build a temporary facility on the east side of the property in 2003, and then a permanent facility on the west side of the property in 2005. The Oaks Children’s Center – a community outreach to families with young children – was also launched in the summer of 2005. Over the last decade, God in His grace has blessed The Oaks with marvelous cultural and ethnic diversity. Today over 500 people from all over greater Bakersfield – that trace their origins from many nations – now call The Oaks their home.
The church’s goal is to make disciples of Jesus and be a Christ-centered, Acts 1:8 Family. We invite you to come and see what God is doing at The Oaks, and with other imperfect people, continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
